Earthlings
Written by WTJ on October 26, 2007 – 11:22 am -EARTHLINGS is a feature length documentary about humanity’s absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and … all ยป scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called “non-human providers.” The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (GLADIATOR) and features music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby.
I think everyone ought to watch this documentary. After watching it, I had stopped eating meats for a week long (just simply horrified by the video). Everytime I smell something fishy in pork, my mind just flashback to the pig farm in the video, that’s so disturbing. I had dissect animals, I had seen real life operation, those don’t freak me out. This video, just freaking disgusting. I’m disgusted by how those people act in the video (though not every meat farm are acting like that). The part that upset me the most is some dude just throw a healthy living dog into the truck and crushed it to death.
After watching the video, I wondered are those meats Americans’ daily meats supply? Are those meats leading to Americans’ obesity? Are those meats the contributors to the dysfunction of many Americans’ brains and making them ignorant?

Coffee break in lab?
Written by Lau on October 20, 2007 – 4:11 pm -Working in lab, apart from lab works, there’ll always be times where we are craving for snack or drink. Well, you know, most of biological labs are strictly prohibited from eating and drinking, it is killing for some of us especially after long hours staying in lab working hard on a work.
As a coffee addict, I usually have my coffee during lunch break. But most of the time, those “kopi tarik” or nescafe can be pretty s*ck by its less coffee powder and excessive condensed milk, though I had again and again asking for less sweet coffee, it will either turn out to be still the same or ‘coffee favor sky juice’ — tasteless!
To stop myself from walking back to the lab full with disappointment and stop spending monies (RM1.40/cup) on those unworth coffee, I finally bought myself some 3 in 1 nescafe which is much more cheaper, costing only about RM0.20~0.30/pack and giving me same aroma and taste. All I need is another mug of hot water, and it’s provided by water heater (not water bath) in another room.
I was surfing through internet one day searching for journals and protocols, I had a good laugh seeing this pics.

Know your supervisor!
Written by Lau on October 13, 2007 – 3:48 pm -Knowing my past, a lot of time juniors come to me seeking my advice regarding MSc in research. Apart from common things like “knowing your interest/goal in life”, “go for a lecturer who can support the research/have grant”… etc, “getting a right supervisor” is the point I always make it loud and clear!
Some juniors were arguing, certain lecturers might sound nice, but they don’t providing good project. “Good project”? How to define “good”?

Laboratory Gloves and Condoms
Written by WTJ on October 8, 2007 – 3:52 pm -I looked at the used gloves and suddenly they resembled condoms.

- They can be only used once.
- No other people will either wear the used ones again, except yourself, sometimes you yourself even disgusted by them.
- They are made of rubber.
- They are for protection and prevention purposes.
- They can be used as balloon.
- They look alike after used.
- They might be reprocessed becoming chewing gum exporting to other countries.

The only thing gloves don’t have is that they don’t have any special flavors, but they makes your hands stink.

Good Partners Are Important
Written by WTJ on October 2, 2007 – 9:49 pm -
There’s a Chinese proverb saying that a mouse’s crap can spoil the whole pot of porridge. This is very true, one person in a lab can screw up research that has been carried out for years. One of my fellow friend show me this email she received:
Hi,
I’ve come up blank, best bet is probably just to complete the poster
yourself. I don’t care if you choose to only put your name on the poster
as i have and likely will contribute nothing to it. Same goes for the
group member participation sheets.Sorry,
You-know-who-you-are
Maybe you think this is funny (me too), but it isn’t funny to the poor groupmate. Choose your working partners carefully, though it is said that sometimes it’s unpredictable, but just try to make the best choice before you start off. If you just run out of luck getting someone as shitty as mouse’s poop, accept it and deal with it. It’s part of everyday’s life.
