walk to school, can’t afford gas

ScienceDaily:

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2008) — Maybe when we were their age, we walked five miles to school, rain or shine. So why don’t most children today walk or bike to school?

It’s not necessarily because they’re spoiled, lazy or over scheduled. According to a University of Michigan researcher, concerns about safety are the main reason that less than 13 percent of U.S. children walked or biked to school in 2004, compared to more than 50 percent who did so in 1969.

“These concerns are strongly linked to the kind of physical environment children navigate between home and school,” said Byoung-Suk Kweon, an environmental and landscape architecture researcher at the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR).

“The greener the route, the more likely it is that children will walk and bike.”

I’m still walking to campus today because:

  • It’s within walking distance (15 minutes).
  • I don’t have car.
  • It’s cheaper.
  • The environment is green and the air is fresh.
  • The air is cool and dry (I don’t sweat easily in Australia).

You also have to put safety into the equation. With the kind of risks of getting kidnapped or attacked on the streets of Malaysia, it’s sometimes better to drive even if its a short distance.

    2. WTJ Says:

decypher: that’s quite true. Back in malaysia, we tend try not to walk outside alone as there are high crime rates. In Melbourne, people feel safer to walk alone, even if it’s late night (avoid drunkards).

    3. JET Says:

We “we” were children there was a LESS threat of a child being abducted, raped, and killed. I do not have children but if I did I definitely would NOT let my child walk to school. It is too big a risk.

    5. Gas Price Relief Says:

Over in the south we are paying $4.25 for regular unleaded. The cost of diseal fuel is just another .50 to .75 cents. If gas prices continue to rise which they will, people will have to make changes in their daily routine. If kids live close to school it’s fine. But when your out in the suburbs, it may be best to contact the schools bus company if you can’t drive them to school.
