“Dignity of Plants”?
Written by Lau on April 25, 2008 – 3:41 pm -I can’t stop the funny feelings and feeling like laughing out when I read the one of the highlight in nature news: Swiss dignity law is threat to plant biology.
The Swiss federal government’s ethics committee on non-human biotechnology has mapped out guidelines to help granting agencies decide which research applications deeply offend the dignity of plants — and hence become unfundable.
The funny feelings are just like when I see the fact we are having not enough money but Deputy Prime Minister insisting our second space tourism is on, and the fact where our CSI graduates are jobless after following courses designed by related government departments.
Except when I read the sentence “dignity of plants”, I can laugh it out.
Living creatures trapped in undignified conditions? A tricky ethical question for Swiss plant biologists.

I don’t mean to be “cruel” or not respecting to plants. Plants are part of the mother nature where all of us have to respect with our heart, especially for those who are involve in sciences. We all know how amazing a life can be.
But… come on, can anyone tell us (with sense) what is that call “dignity of plants”? “independence of plants”?
My concern is, a lot of time plants can be a great alternative to mice, rabbits, and other animals when come to, for example, earlier stage of development of vaccines. I believe plants have saved countless mice and rabbits especially the moment when genetic engineering rock scientists way of doing research.
While Germany is compromising with stem cells researches issue, which has long bother Germany’s scientists, I cannot see the point of “dignity of plants”.
What a joke? April fool already pass.
Anyway, I’m feeling better now, we are not the only country full with nonsense. Haha~
