Investors Avoid Biotechs in Australia due to IP

DEALS involving patents between research groups and biotechnology companies are a poison pill obstructing investment in the sector, analysts said yesterday.

Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Minister Kim Carr said yesterday intellectual property (IP) ownership would be one of the factors examined in a new review into the pharmaceuticals sector.

    I don’t agree that researchers charging royalties for the mass production and selling of products resulting from their work is a bad thing. Especially in the case of academic or government agencies (like CSIRO) it’s not like the money is going to let the scientists go on holiday in Las Vegas. It’ll be ploughed back into funding more research.
