Australians Fatter Than Americans

Australia has been titled world’s most obese nation on Thursday. A study titled “Australia’s Future Fat Bomb” from Baker Heart Institute reported that Australians are more obese than Americans. 14,000 adult Australians’ height and weight checks are collected in 2005 for this study. It is also predicted 700,000 extra heart-related hospital admissions will be mushroomed in the next 20 years due to the obesity and around 125,000 people would die because of the heart disease. It is advised that government can subsidize gym memberships.

The study followed 6000 American men of Japanese descent over 40 years to see how many survived to 85 years of age. At the conclusion 42% had survived but only 11% were healthy. Interestingly the healthy 11% had avoided 6 particular risk factors, four of which were; being overweight, high blood pressure, high blood sugars and high blood fats or grouped together Metabolic Syndrome. The other two were excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

@WTJ: Australians live longer than anyone else on the planet, second only to the Japanese. Why?
One reason is the BMI scale is an inaccurate indicator of obesity.
If you look at how the BMI is calculated:
BMI = weight(kg) / height² (m)
It doesn’t take into account the percentage of fat on the body. So, using the BMI on elite rugby players would find them all overweight, but obviously they are far from being obese.
Another reason would be the better health care system, if the documentary “Sicko” (by Michael Moore) was anything to go by.
@Jesmi: When you live to 85 years of age, it would be extraordinary NOT to be afflicted with some form of age related illness. Having said that, staying off the booze and ciggies, with some exercise would make life a lot better.
