Acupressure Reduces Anxiety Level of Children Before Surgery

Written by WTJ on October 2, 2008 – 2:29 am -

Acupressure plays an important role in enriching Chinese martial arts movies and literatures.  Acupressure can make a person laugh, stun, faint, deaf, blind, or mute  for the whole day or several hours.  Dr. Zeev Kain and Dr. Shu-Ming Wang found that acupressure treatment can lower the anxiety levels of children from the stress of surgery.  The key to this calming effect is the Extra-1 acupoint (Yin-Tang) which locates in the midpoint between the eyebrows.  This effective method is cheap and drug-free.  It can also easily applied by anyone (with proper instructions).  However please do not take out the long needle to acupuncture the children as this might freak them out instead of calming them.

The paper was published in September’s Anesthesia and Analgesia (vol. 107, no. 3).
