Previous studies show that serotonin plays an important part in one’s drinking behaviour. It was found that acute drinking cause the increase of serotonin release and signalling at brain region involves in alcohol consumption controlling. Studies found that neurochemical serotonin made people like alcohol.
Researchers from University of Virginia Health System published their study in February issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research showing that a serotonin transporter gene, SLC6A4, had strong association with drinking intensity. They studied six different DNA sequence variation of the serotonin transporter gene of 270 alcoholics. They found that gene with 3′ end variant showed strong association with the drinking behaviour.
