First Human Clone In Australia?

Written by WTJ on June 8, 2008 – 9:34 pm -

cloned humanTwo separate research groups from Monash University and Melbourne lab of the Australian Stem Cell Centre submitted licence requests for creating cloned human embryos.  By working with Sydney IVF, the teams could create cloned human embryos using fertility treatment left over spare eggs.  The cloned embryos would be destroyed within seven days old and once stem cells were collected.  This could lead to a cure for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, and type 1 diabetes in less than 10 years.  National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) will decide approval of the applications this week.  Tomas Stojanov, Sydney IVF research director, was confident that both applications would be approved.

[YouTube] Stem Cells

Written by Lau on May 13, 2008 – 10:39 am -

A brief yet beautiful 3D animation on introduction of stem cells, worth to have a look.

Another good presentation on “Everything You Wanted To Know About Stem Cells”, quite informative but I manage to watch only half of it as it is 51 minutes long!

I shall come back to this later.

Australian Girl Changed Blood Type After Liver Transplant

Written by WTJ on January 26, 2008 – 10:08 am -

Phyorg.com:

Demi-Lee Brennan was aged nine and seriously ill with liver failure when she received the transplant, doctors at a top Sydney children’s hospital told AFP.

Nine months later they discovered she had changed blood types and that her immune system had switched over to that of the donor after stem cells from the new liver migrated to her bone marrow.

She is now a healthy 15-year-old, Michael Stormon, a hepatologist treating her, told AFP. He said he had given several presentations on the case around the world and had heard of none like it.

Could it be another soul living inside her blood? LOL!
